REPORT OF CANADIAN FARM TOUR (June 30 to July 31, 2016)

While in Canada from June 30th till August 1s, I had the opportunity to visit three of the farm communities in Ontario. This is besides the newly acquired land near Ottawa. Here a brief report on each of the farms.

THE FIL & SUKHAYANTI FARM (1 of 4 reports) – Promoting Organic Farming and Cow Protection

Three devotees ventured out on Sunday July 24th to visit in the same day the three farms located close to one another some 2 hours north east of Ottawa. Our first stop was at Fil and Sukhayanti’s farm. A few devotees joined us at the farm, namely Kala prabhu and Krishna Das Kaviraja prabhu.

Fil and Sukhayanti made a major decision two years back to leave the corporate world and dive into the world of farming and self-sufficiency. They first decided to spend 6 months with Balabhadra prabhu, former Ministry for ISKCON Ministry for Cow Protection and Agriculture. Balabhadra prabhu had his own farm adjacent to the New Vrindavan community (he has since relocated in Florida) to learn first hand animal husbandry, in particular ox training. Soon after completing their training, they we anxious to get their own piece of land and get their feet wet… which they did.

They presently have an old farmland with various structures including an old barn. Fil had to do a lot of renovations to prepare the barn for the new calves he rescued from slaughter. At present he has some 8 cows and has started a training program for the oxen.

In addition to the cows, both Fil and Sukhayanti have their own garden where they grow a variety of vegetables. The first year was experimental where they were catering to a number of families who had invested in organic food. This year being their second in operation, they decided just to grow for their own needs.

Being a one family entity handling a farmland is not such an easy thing but Fil is determined to continue working on it.

July 27, 2016, Fil writes:

“The rain we had was so nice. A long time coming for sure. I agree wholeheartedly that it is the Lord reciprocating. We thank you all for visiting our farm and for seeing what it is that we are trying to do. As you have said, Srila Prabhupada very much wanted these farm communities and stressed a great importance of them and the Varnasrama system in the later part of his life here on earth. Not only to feed the people of the world who would be fleeing the cities but to show the leaders of this demoniac society how to properly live and to also make chanting easier.

As Srila Prabhupada said ” Vaisnava is not so easy,,,,they are all falling down,,,therefore Varnasrama needs to be established to make the way easy”. Farms are a small part of Varnasrama and need to be utilized properly. We are doing our best and hope to please the Lord and Srila Prabhupada one day.”

Selama di Canada dari 30 Juni s/d 1 Agustus, saya telah mendapat kesempatan untuk mengunjungi tiga komunitas pertanian di Ontario. Ini selain daritanah yang baru didapatkan di dekat Ottawa. Berikut laporan singkat dari masing-masing Kebun tersebut.

Kebun FIL & SUKHAYANTI (I dari 4 laporan) – Mempromosikan pertanian organic dan perlindungan sapi

Tiga penyembah berpergian pada minggu 24 July untuk mengunjungi tiga kebun pada hari yang sama, yang terletak tidak jauh dari satu dengan yang lain, sekitar 2 jam arah barat laut dari Ottawa. Langkah pertama kami adalah mengunjungi kebun Fil dan Sukhayanti. Beberapa penyembah bergabung dengan kami di kebun tersebut, yakni Kala Prabhu dan Krishna Das Kaviraja Prabhu .

Fil dan Sukhayanti membuat keputusan besar dua tahun yang lalu untuk meninggalkan dunia perusahaan kemudian terjun ke dunia pertanian dan usaha mencukupi kebutuhan sendiri. Langkah pertama yang mereka ambil adalah tinggal selama 6 bulan dengan Balabhadra prabhu, yang saat ini menjabat sebagai Mentri ISKCON untuk Pertanian dan Perlindungan Sapi. Balabadra Prabhu memiliki kebun pertaniannya sendiri berdekatan dengan Komunitas New Vrindavan (yang beliau punya sejak pindah ke Florida), untuk kali pertamanya mereka belajar tentang peternakan, dan juga pelatihan sapi jantan. Segera setelah mereka menyelesaikan latihan mereka, mereka bersemangat untuk mendapatkan tanah mereka sendiri untuk mulai terjun bertani…dan kini mereka sedang lakukan.

Saat ini mereka memiliki sebuah kebun pertanian tua dengan berbagai bangunan termasuk sebuah gudang tua. Fil harus melakukan banyak renovasi untuk membenahi gudang tersebut untuk dua anak sapi yang baru saja diselamatkan dari tempat penjagalan. Saat ini ia memiliki sekitar 8 sapi dan dia telah memulai untuk melatih sapi jantannya.

Selain dari pada sapi, Fil dan Sukhayanti keduanya memiliki kebunnya sendiri dimana mereka menanam berbagai jenis sayuran. Pengalaman tahun pertama mereka dengan memberikan ketering kepada beberapa keluarga yang telah memberikan investasi untuk pertanian organic mereka. Tahun ini adalah tahun kedua mereka beroprasi, dan di tahun ini mereka memutuskan bercocok tanam hanya untuk kebutuhan mereka sendiri.

Menjadi sebuah keluarga yang mengurus tanah pertanian tidaklah mudah, namun Fil sangat sabar dalam melanjutkan pekerjaan ini.

Seperti yang anda telah sebutkan, Srila Prabhupada sangat ingin Komunitas pertanian, serta menekankan sangat pentingnya hal tersebut dan system Varnasrama pada saat hari terakhir hidup beliau di planet Bhumi ini.
