There are several farming initiatives in Ukraine besides the three main rural projects of Mother Farm, Bhumi Farm and New Mayapur. What follows is a brief report shared by Bhakta Simon who visited various projects along with Bhakta Eugene Salty.
At New Mayapur, Bhakta Timur keeps beehives and produces ahimsa honey. He also grows raspberry, black currant and fermented herbal tea. Another devotee, Vamana prabhu cares for 30 cows and grows pumpkins, tomatoes and other vegetables.
Seven kilometres from New Mayapur, one devotee by the name Oleg Kotenko looks after one acre of land where he keeps vineyard in his two greenhouses. He feels that one acre of land is sufficient to meet one family’s needs.
Another family headed by Vamsi prabhu lives in the village of Hupalivka some 10 Kilometers from New Mayapur. The name “Hupal” in Ukraine literally means “Gopal”, so Gopal’s Village. Vamsi prabhu, with the help of his grown-up son Bhakta Fedir, grows various vegetable, in particular cabbage, and also maintains some 50 beehives.
Farming and caring for cows come naturally to residents of Ukraine as the whole country not many years ago was the breadbasket for the entire Soviet Union. Practically everywhere one travels one can see the rich black soil that grows corn, sunflower seeds, various vegetables and other crops in abundance. A good number of devotees have their roots in farming and still remember their parents working on farms and milking cows during the period of Cooperative Farming system under the communist regime.
