It’s seen over a few decades that people are migrating from villages to cities in big numbers in India and even world at large. But hardly we hear of people migrating from cities to villages. This definitely accounts for many environmental, social, economical and spiritual problems reigning the present times. Reasons could be many but one foremost reason could be that the people in general are not aware of the advantages of village life.
IDVM-India’s Rural development department has designed a program called ‘A day in village’ for city and town dwellers to experience the serene and natural environ favorable for spiritual practices. In a remote setting close to Bay of Bengal (Mahodadhi) and Gundlakamma river, this ‘A day in village’ was planned in Gundaipalem village.
Four families from different places in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states and 6 single devotees joined the camp conducted on 7th & 8th October, 2019.
After the morning prayers and japa, devotees took opportunity to churn the yogurt for butter, to pound the paddy for removing rice grains, to grind Ragi grains to get fine flour. Also pulses were ground to dehusk. The same dal was cooked on a chulha using cow dung cakes as fuel.
After honoring prasadam devotees set out on a bullock cart to visit houses of devotees in the village. They offered the guests freshly grown vegetables, fruits and flowers they were growing as charity. One villager though a Christian keeps a cow and named it Mary and uses the cow dung and urine for growing a large variety (around 11) of vegetables and fruits in back yard. She got the training to use natural manures from the local devotee, Vraja Vrindavan prabhu, who trains other villagers the use of cow dung and urine in agriculture. After lunch prasadam devotees went to the agriculture field and sowed Ragi seeds. Cows were taken for grazing by few young boys in the open fields of the village.
Later the devotees went for dip in river and ocean sailing through a big boat.
In the evening as part of Village Durgadevi celebrations devotees performed village sankirtan and later there were lectures and prasadam was distributed.
HG Yuddhistra prabhu from Russia and HG Kamalakanta prabhu from Indonesia also attended the camp as special invitees. They performed exhilarating kirtans and gave short lectures inspiring the villagers. Around six maha books and fifteen small books and 20 Btgs were distributed. Around 300 small plates of prasadam was distributed.
The attendees of the camp were accommodated in natural mud and straw made guest houses.
The camp ended the next day with the attendees sharing their experiences.
Idvm plans to conduct more such camps to attract city folks to experience village life.
