During our stay in Lalita Pura Kunja Seva Ashram (August 1-4, 2019), we took the opportunity to visit another farm project in Kalimantan named Ganga Sagara Baru, located about 150 kms from Lalita Pura Kunja Seva project. It took us about 2.5 hours to go to the ghat (port) wherefrom we had to continue our journey for another 1.5 hours to Ganga Sagara Baru (GSB) farm by speedboat.

We were eleven devotees going for the GSB visit. It proved to be a very nice boat picnic after which all the devotees honored mahaprasadam on the boat while enjoying the natural beauty all around the vast Kapuas river. GSB is a 125 hectare farm project. It is located close to the estuary of the Kapuas river. The name of Ganga Sagara Baru is derived because this river resembles mother Ganga in its color and width. Therefore, even I was reminded of the banks of Mother Ganga in Sri Mayapur Dham where I live. Ganga Sagara – because of the meeting of Mother Ganga with the sea (sagara), and Baru means new (in Bahasa language, Indonesia).

This farm is currently taken care by one devotee family. Sundara Gopala prabhu, along with his wife Campaka Latha mataji, with son Gangadhara and daughter Nandini is serving at the farm. They live in a very simple cottage where they have a very beautiful temple of Sri Sri Pancha-Tattva in their residence. They also have a small goshala with two cows.

Out of these 125 hectares of land, 30 hectare is used for growing organic rice, some 40 hectare is still forest land and the rest is used for growing vegetables, fruit trees such as bananas, mangoes, coconuts, jack fruits, dragon fruits, etc.. There is also some land used for only for grazing their cows.

Sundara Gopala prabhu said “… I have been serving here since 20 years. Of course in the beginning there were so many challenges, other devotees also tried to stay and serve in this farm, but none of them could stay for long. The main problem here is of drinking water and mosquito infestation. We therefore harvest rain water and store them in big jars. We use this water for cooking and it’s enough for one year. We hardly go to the market because we have ample rice, vegetables, and fruits. Even the neighboring people come here to buy our organic fruits like bananas and dragon fruits. They pay more price because it’s organic. Definitely we are very happy to get a visit from the devotees, especially Maharaj. Because this is the only thing that we are lacking- sadhu-sanga. I am always praying to Sri Sri Pancha-Tattva that when will that day come when many devotee families will move and stay in this farm, so the Vrindavan village can manifest here…” (Towards the end of his speech, he couldn’t check his tears flowing down and moistening his cheeks)

In the afternoon we were served with varieties of fresh organic healthy vegetables and fruits prasadam plucked directly from the land and grown by Sundara Gopala prabhu and his small family. This was one of the best prasadam that we ever had in our lives.

Thank you very much to HH Bhakti Raghava Swami Maharaj for always encouraging Sundara Gopala prabhu’s family to continue their service in this farm, trying to manifest the desire of HDG A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. And special thank to Sundara Gopal prabhu and his family for always being patient to selflessly dedicate their lives to take care of this farm project.
